At Obsequio, we understand the vital role that technology plays in ensuring businesses operate efficiently and remain compliant with safety regulations. As part of our commitment to developing the next generation of IT professionals, we provide apprenticeships that offer hands-on experience, expert mentorship, and a structured path for career growth.
This National Apprenticeship Week, we’re celebrating the journey of Ben Webb, Apprentice IT Systems Administrator, and his experiences in combining his passion for technology with a career in fire and compliance.
For Ben, an apprenticeship in IT within the fire and compliance industry was the perfect way to combine his love for technology with a sector that makes a real impact on safety and regulation.
“I chose an IT apprenticeship in the fire and compliance industry because it combines my passion for technology with a sector that plays a crucial role in safety and regulation. IT is essential in keeping businesses running smoothly, and this role allows me to apply my technical skills in a meaningful way.”
When looking for the right apprenticeship, Obsequio stood out due to its strong reputation, supportive learning environment, and opportunities to work alongside experienced IT professionals who provide mentorship and guidance.
“I knew this would be the ideal place to grow my skills and build a solid foundation for my IT career.”
Ben’s role is a mix of problem-solving, software implementation, data analysis, and IT administration. No two days are the same, and the dynamic nature of the role keeps things exciting.
“I get to see how technology supports business operations and regulatory compliance. Every day is different, and that’s what makes it exciting! I’m constantly learning and developing new skills.”
The most exciting part of Ben’s job is the constant learning and problem-solving involved in IT. Whether it’s troubleshooting issues, analysing data, or streamlining processes, Ben enjoys the detective-like nature of his role.
“It’s exciting to investigate problems like a detective and find solutions that keep everything running smoothly.”
Since starting his apprenticeship, Ben has developed key analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills. He has also learned to explain complex IT concepts in a clear way and manage his time efficiently.
Like any apprenticeship, Ben faced challenges – especially when dealing with unfamiliar IT issues under pressure. Initially overwhelming, he learned to stay calm, research solutions, and seek guidance from experienced colleagues.
“Over time, I developed a problem-solving mindset and became more confident in diagnosing and fixing issues. Now, I see challenges as learning opportunities rather than obstacles.”
Working with experienced IT professionals has been a game-changer for Ben. Their hands-on guidance and real-world problem-solving techniques have helped him build confidence and understand complex IT concepts more easily.
“Their mentorship has also taught me the importance of asking questions, staying curious, and continuously improving my skills.”
Ben is still exploring the many paths available in IT but knows his apprenticeship is giving him the exposure and experience he needs to make an informed decision about his future.
“My apprenticeship has opened my eyes to the variety of roles within IT, and I’m eager to gain more experience in different areas to better understand where my strengths and interests lie.”
For Ben, nothing is more satisfying than solving complex problems and seeing the direct impact of his work.
“Whether it’s fixing an issue or improving a system, knowing that I’ve contributed to making things run smoothly has been really satisfying.”
He also enjoys helping and supporting colleagues, assisting with technical issues, and gaining confidence in his abilities.
Ben encourages anyone considering an IT apprenticeship in compliance and life safety to develop a strong understanding of both IT systems and regulatory requirements.
“It’s essential to balance technical knowledge with attention to detail, as ensuring systems are secure and meet legal standards is key in this field.”
He also highlights the importance of communication skills – being able to explain technical issues to non-technical colleagues – as well as staying curious and proactive in learning.
“Be proactive in learning about industry standards and certifications, as they can open more opportunities. The field is always evolving, so staying adaptable is key.”
